This week I wanted to highlight the recent work of some of the artists covered by Atlas in the past.
First the Atlas Discussions Alumni Group
John Houck’s show Playing and Reality at On Stellar Rays is up until May 22nd. Congrats John on an excellent show with exciting things on the horizon. Look for exhibitions in New York, Aspen and Dallas in the coming year.
Matt Magee is a very busy man. He has been making prints and installing a lovely wall drawing at Tamarind Institute in NM, all the while preparing for a solo at Hiram Butler in Houston opening May 21. He also has a show in Sharon, CT at Darren Winston Booksellers in case you’re in the neighborhood.
Tanja Hollander continues to travel and shoot portraits for her 2017 MASS MoCA show “Are you really my friend?” while continuing #ActFastFriday (a weekly donation based print release) and working with filmmakers on a documentary piece about her travels for the project.
Jeri Coppola
I recently visited Jeri Coppola’s studio and got to see a number of new works that marry sculptural materials and photography. These pieces further develop Coppola’s theme of places between places that we covered in our discussion in March of 2015.
Mary Temple has work in Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné opening June 9th in Atlanta, GA which comes to the Daedalus Foundation in Brooklyn in September 2016. She is also at work on two permanent installations, one at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, another in the entryway to the McCarren Park Recreation Center, both being completed this summer.
Martha Lewis
Aside from her radio program and curatorial projects, Martha Lewis has been making monotypes using crushed paper, similar to the work exhibited in Fold at Planthouse in 2015. She is also in the early stages of a letterpress edition with Planthouse, so look out for that.
And friends of Atlas…
Prem Krishnamurthy of P! and Project Projects co-curated DIS-PLAY RE-PLAY at the Austrian Cultural Forum. The small show is excellent, has a newspaper print zine with essays and images and is located 2 blocks from MoMA if you haven’t been to ACFNY. Prem was interviewed by Ken Becker in a proto-Atlas Discussion back in October 2012.
Anders Bergstrom, an artist from Fold at Planthouse in 2015 has a show at Greg Kucera in Seattle until May 21st.
Andrew Witkin has an excellent show entitled Satisfaction at Theodore Art in Bushwick until May 22nd.
Karen Dow
Karen Dow recently closed Suspended by Process, a monotype show at Artspace in New Haven. The image above shows the work she printed in the gallery space on site.
Nathan Kensinger’s most recent Curbed piece Revamped Brooklyn Navy Yard Begins Its Slow Unfurling includes images of Duke Riley’s Fly By Night performance.
