With Atlas – 150 I am going to start sharing exhibition proposals and at that point Atlas will alternate between interviews, exhibition concepts and reviews.
Before I get to the 150th Atlas, I wanted to present two exhibitions I curated a few years back. Structured was the first show I had curated, thanks to Jamie Johnson and Art Connects New York (a fantastic group that works with artists and curators and social service agencies in New York City to create museum-quality permanent exhibitions of contemporary artwork). The show was held in SoHo in 2010 and featured William Dutterer, Sara Eichner, Austin Kennedy, Nathan Kensinger, Michael Neff, Heidi Neilson, Lauren Pascarella, Eliza Stamps and Matthew Trygve Tung. I would like to think I knew what I was doing but most likely I didn’t. The artists were all trusting and generous and I still am amazed at the level of trust they gave me.
The same summer of 2010 Artist Pension Trust allowed a few young curators access to their NYC warehouse to curate 3x3x3. This was the brain child of the excellent Stephanie Adamowicz. Each of the 3 spaces was 3 total works by three artists. My space was The Inherited Plane with works by Keltie Ferris, Kate Shepherd and Siebren Versteeg.
I show these first efforts at curating to let you know where I started. Though I have been a dealer for 10 years now, I am still a fledgling curator. When I look at artists that I greatly admire, I imagine showing their work in a context that will do well by them. Of course I want to be recognized for a job well done, but the great honor is having the artist pleased with the way their work is presented.
